Mizmorei Tehilim &#8211; Kol Haamim, 1965.<\/p>\n<p>Since for the previous Psalm 46 we learned about the composition of a nine year-old child, today we shall explore the choral work of an Israeli composer who recently turned 93. Tzvi Avni, who was born in Germany in 1927 and moved to Israel at the age of 10, is considered to be one of the central figures of Israeli classical music, but also won first prize in the popular Israel Song Festival in 1960. There was a time in Israel when the distinction between classical and popular was not as sharp as it is today. Avni\u2019s Mizmorei Tehilim are more evidence of that.<\/p>\n<p>The work was composed in 1965, and is based on psalms 47, 48 and 150. The first movement includes verses 2-3 and then 7-8, followed by a return to the opening lines, to create an ABA structure. <br \/>\nThe style is considered \u201cMediterranean\u201d &#8211; though not in the accepted sense today of Arabic-influenced popular song. Rather, in the sense that was familiar to Israeli composers from the 1940s-1960s, the melody is somewhat monotonous, single voiced, but with complex rhythmic structures (5 beats to a measure), and creates a feeling of Biblical archaism, typified by this region.<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally the ensemble breaks into a call and response between men and women.
