  1. The day of the shofar blast<\/em>. The psalm is part of the Rosh Hashanah liturgy, and is said before the blowing of the shofar, to which it is very fitting. For Rosh Hashanah is the coronation of God, and the shofar blowing is part of the ceremony: \u201cGod ascends midst acclamation; the LORD, to the blasts of the horn\u201d (verse 6). There are scholars who believe that the psalm was composed precisely for this event.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Hearing the sounds<\/em>. The psalm really exemplifies the musical experience that it describes: \u201cclap your hands, raise a joyous shout…midst acclamation…the blasts of the horn.\u201d And even gets into a sort of rhythm with the call to sing – that appears 5 times in verses 7-8.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Amelioration<\/em>. There is a tension between the festive coronation of God over the whole world, and the defeat of all the nations by Israel. \u201cHe subjects peoples to us, sets nations at our feet\u201d (verse 4). Radak sweetens the verse by explaining the first word <\/span>yadber<\/span><\/em> not as \u201csubjects\u201d (or “destroys,” as in <\/span>dever<\/span><\/em>, plague, as Rashi does) but as leadership: \u201c<\/span>Yadber<\/span><\/em>, will lead. That is, He will lead them from the ends of the earth to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The \u201cgreat of the peoples.\u201d<\/em> Who are the great of the peoples who are gathered together with \u201cthe retinue of Abraham\u2019s God?\u201d And what does their joining mean?
