No, the title is not misspelled; it is intended to draw attention to a singular noun, <\/span>misgav<\/span><\/em>, \u201chaven,\u201d 13 of whose 17 appearances in Tanakh are in Psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The verbal root <\/span>s-g-v<\/em> <\/span>conveys the meaning of a secure height; hence, it can be a stronghold, a retreat, or, figuratively, any place that offers refuge. Its distribution throughout Tanakh is indicative of its restricted use to biblical poetry. Apart from Psalms, it appears twice in Isaiah, once in Jeremiah, and even its appearance in the essentially narrative prose Book of Samuel is in David\u2019s valedictory song (2 Samuel 22:3). You might recognize the word from the Jerusalem hospital <\/span>Misgav la-Dakh<\/span><\/em>\u2014 \u201chaven for the afflicted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In our chapter, curiously, it appears twice and, even more curiously, in the identical phrasing: \u201cThe Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our haven. Selah\u201d (8, 12). Indeed, a close reading indicates that the psalm consists of three stanzas of four verses, each ending with the word \u201cSelah.\u201d In the first stanza, the psalmist expresses his implicit faith in God, utilizing the plural voice to indicate that he was speaking on behalf of the entire nation. Just as He had stood by them in the past, so, implicitly, He is standing by them in the present. The theme of the second stanza resembles the first, save that here the danger to Israel comes from its enemies while that anticipated earlier was natural. Indeed, the co-mingling of nature and history is noticeable in other psalms as well (e.g., 99:1: \u201cpeoples tremble, the earth quakes\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

While the second stanza is particular to Israel, the third stanza is universal: \u201cHe puts a stop to wars throughout the earth\u201d (10); \u201cI dominate the nations, I dominate the earth\u201d (11). This may well account for the repetition at its end of \u201cThe Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our haven\u201d (12), redirecting our attention back to Israel for whom God is a haven from all troubles, natural and
