45:14\u00a0 \u201cAll the princess\u2019s treasure is pearls, filigree of gold her raiment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Masoretic Text reads literally \u201call the princess\u2019s treasure is inward,\u201d which Jewish tradition has taken as a slogan for the virtuous wife\u2019s conjugal modesty. But the immediately following word has a superfluous <\/span>mem<\/span><\/em> at the beginning. If one moves it back to the end of the previous word and inserts a second <\/span>nun<\/span><\/em> for the <\/span>mem<\/em> <\/span>in the middle of the word, instead of <\/span>penimah<\/span><\/em>, \u201cinward,\u201d the consonantal text would read <\/span>peninim<\/span><\/em>, \u201cpearls,\u201d which makes more sense and a much better parallelism. There is also a syntactic problem here, because \u201cprincess\u201d would have to be a vocative (\u201cAll the treasure, princess\u201d) but because the royal bride is spoken of in the third person in the last half of the verse, the translation does not represent the vocative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
