  1. Songs and roses<\/em>. The psalm opens with \u201cFor the leader; on shoshannim<\/em>,\u201d apparently a musical instruction to the performers, not connected to the content of the song. 15 chapters from now (Psalm 60), we will meet a very different sort of psalm, but with a similar heading.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Unique<\/em>. The psalm deals with the king, and is dedicated to him, and is quite unusual in the context of the book of Psalms, where the main topic of the poetry is God, the King of Kings, and is the central character.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Who\u2019s the king? And who\u2019s the bride<\/em>? If we interpret the psalm as referring to a particular historical incident, known to us from biblical literature, then the king who married a \u201cTyrian lass\u201d (verse 13) would fit Solomon, who married many foreign women (1 Kings 11), or to Ahab, who married Jezebel, daughter of the king of Sidon, near Tyre (1 KIngs 16).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A moment of morality<\/em>. Why was the king chosen? See verse 8, and which of all the things he is praised for, was he crowned: \u201cYou love righteousness and hate wickedness; rightly has God, your God, chosen to anoint you with oil.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u201cAll the honor of the daughter of the king is inward\u201d (kol kevudah bat-melech pnimah<\/em>,<\/em> \u201cgoods of all sorts. The royal princess…\u201d). If you are familiar with this phrase as describing the modesty of the Jewish woman, it is worth knowing the <\/span>peshat<\/em>, the more literal contextual meaning: that all the belongings, the \u201cgoods of all sorts\u201d are brought into the palace, together with the festively dressed princess (verse 14).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points
