Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.

Genre:
Psalm of Royalty–This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.

Chapter Summary:
This psalm describes the virtues of the ideal monarch of the Jewish people, perhaps an allusion to the high stature of Torah scholars. Alternatively, it is perhaps a reference to the righteousness of the messianic king and the redemption he will usher in.

This psalm consists of eighteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading; the final verse serves as a conclusion.
In verse 2, the psalmists praise their composition and present their song to “the king” (see Chapter Summary above).
In verses 3-8, they praise the king and his virtues.
In verses 9-17, they describe a royal wedding and praise the bride, perhaps alluding to the messianic era.

Introductory Words:
Lamnatsei’ach–To the Conductor
Shir–Song

Technical Terminology:
Shoshanim–a musical instrument which resembles a bell with petals attached, likening it to a lily or rose.

Biblical Places:
Ophir–a country that exported gold to Israel and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The exact location of Ophir is unknown.
Tzor–Tyre–a city located on the southwest coast of Lebanon, just to the north of Israel. It was particularly known for the production of a rare and extraordinarily expensive purple dye, known as Tyrian purple, perhaps produced from the murex shellfish. The color was, in many cultures of ancient times, reserved for the use of nobility. A variant form of this dye was techelet, of sky blue color, used to color the tzitzit fringes of the four cornered garment.

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 4: “Gird your sword on the thigh”.
The Talmud, Shabbat 63a, deduces from this verse that a weapon may be carried in the public domain on Shabbat, if being worn as a ceremonial object or jewelry. The Talmudic sages are perhaps also teaching, by way of allegory, that one should be careful to review his/her learning. Just as a sword stands ready upon the thigh of a mighty warrior, enabling him to triumph in battle, so too having one’s Torah study “upon the thigh”, at the ready to recall and engage in debate, will enable him to succeed in the application of his learning, and is thus ultimately his ‘jewelry”–his glory and splendor.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
