  1. Contrasts<\/em>. The glorious past in the Land, versus the present of humiliation and defeat. Lovingkindness vs. abandonment. The faithfulness of the people opposite the <\/span>hester panim<\/span><\/em>, the hidden face, of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. What\u2019s the opposite of light<\/em>? \u201cYour goodwill (<\/span>or panecha<\/span><\/em>,<\/em> lit. \u2018the light of Your face\u2019), for You favored them\u201d (verse 4), when the Israelites are desired by God, they enjoy \u201cthe light of His face,\u201d and when not, the face is hidden: \u201cWhy do You hide Your face, ignoring our affliction and distress?\u201d (25).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Martyrdom<\/em>. To die for the loyalty to the faith. Verse 23 became in future generations a sort of motto, \u201cIt is for Your sake that we are slain all day long.\u201d It\u2019s not a coincidence that it\u2019s also in the <\/span>Selichot<\/span><\/em> penitential prayers before the High Holidays in the Polish tradition, and in the special <\/span>piyyut<\/span><\/em>, liturgical poem that begins those prayers in the tradition of the Syrian Jews of Aram Tzuba.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Like sheep to the slaughter<\/em>. That phrase is not only from here (the second half of verse 23). We met this image 224 chapters ago, in the description of the servant of God (Isaiah 53), and also in Jeremiah (chapter 11). But the verse here is definitely a locus classicus for this familiar phrase.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Bar Kochba\u2019s favorite verse<\/em>. The Talmud attributes to Bar Kochba the slogan, \u201cYet You have rejected and disgraced us; You do not go with our armies\u201d (see also Psalm 60:12). When Bar Kochba said it, he declared that God\u2019s abandonment was a fact, and thus transferred all responsibility to himself and his army, and to God he said: \u201cDon\u2019t help, but don\u2019t hinder.\u201d A little similar (but very different) from the context of this psalm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
