Psalm 44:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nSons of Korach–Korach rebelled against his cousins Moses and Aaron and challenged their authority. Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm focuses on expressing deep sorrow for the travails of a nation and as a group asking for God\u2019s blessing or intervention.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAs in the previous psalm, this one, too, foretells and describes the future exile. The singers depict the hardship that will ensue, appealing to the soul not to lose hope.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-seven, verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-9, the psalmists tell of God\u2019s wondrous deeds performed on behalf of those who conquered the Land of Israel in days of old, and speak of the salvation that God has brought in his generation as well.
\nIn verses 10-27, they speak of the people\u2019s defeat and shame, and talk of their loyalty to God\u2019s covenant. Even after their enemies mock and slaughter them, they pray to God for salvation.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:
\nMaskil<\/em>–a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).
\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah<\/em>\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say<\/em>
\nFor salvation from enemies–Verse 8 states: \u201cBut You have delivered us from our adversaries, and those who cause hatred against us have You shamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 9 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShanah. Segments of verses 14 and 23 form one of the verses of the long Tachanun<\/em> (Penitential Prayer), recited on Mondays and Thursdays.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 7: \u201cFor not in my bow do I trust nor does my sword deliver me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Talmud, Bava Batra 123a, explains that Ya\u2019akov (Jacob) acquired that land not by mighty swords or bows and arrows, but rather through his prayers and supplications. By equating the words \u201ccharbi<\/em>\u201d–\u201dmy sword\u201d, and \u201ckashti<\/em>\u201d–\u201dmy bow\u201d of this verse with the same terms used by Ya\u2019akov in blessing his sons prior to his death, the Talmud deduces that \u201ccharbi<\/em>\u201d refers to prayer, and \u201ckashti<\/em>\u201d refers to a bakashah<\/em>–request. The Talmud is further employing a play on words here, as the word \u201ckashti<\/em>\u201d is written in the above verses with the prefix \u201c\u05d1\u201d –\u201cb<\/em>\u201d–\u201din\u201d, and thus is read and pronounced similarly to the word \u201c\u05d1\u05e7\u05e9\u05d4\u201d–\u201dbakashah<\/em>\u201d–request.<\/p>\n
