The family has left on the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, but I cannot go this year. My injured leg slows me down too much, and the donkey is needed to carry the tithes and thanksgiving offerings. I know that staying back is the right thing to do but it hurts so much. Like a hind crying for water, my soul cries for You, O God, my soul thirsts for You. When oh when, shall I again be able to behold Your presence in the sanctuary?

I should relax. My daughter will soon be here with her children, so we can spend the festival together. Before leaving for the Temple, her husband assured me that she is preparing my favorite foods so that I can rejoice on the harvest festival. He does not understand that tears have been my food, day and night, their saltiness only increasing my thirst.

Attempts to comfort me feel like a taunt. God’s glory fills the earth, they claim. I should rejoice in the bounty we have received here, on our inherited land, itself a gift from God. And yet they go up to Jerusalem and I remain behind.

Where is God? God may be everywhere in potential, but in the Temple, God is ever-present and accessible like nowhere else. When I think of this, I pour out my soul. My soul cries for You, O God!

Be not downcast, my soul. May a song of praise well up within me, and a prayer to the God of my life.

Despite feeling forgotten and walking in gloom, I do not wish to be downcast.
