{"id":83199,"date":"2020-11-10T17:16:35","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T15:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=83199"},"modified":"2020-11-10T17:16:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T15:16:35","slug":"psalms-and-the-song-of-the-palmach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/psalms-and-the-song-of-the-palmach\/","title":{"rendered":"Psalms and The Song of The Palmach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"83199","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34243,"related_cahpter":"609","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"An undercover anthem\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single word in this psalm once played a slight role in the history of the Jewish settlement (<em>Yishuv<\/em>) prior to the establishment of the State of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our psalmist began with a paean to the spiritual life: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like a hind crying for water, my soul cries for You, O God\u201d (2) and expressed his deep yearning for an encounter with the divine: \u201cMy soul thirsts for God, the living God; O when will I come to appear before God\u201d (3). When others mock him calling out \u201cWhere is your God?\u201d (4), he replied: \u201cWhen I think of this, I pour out my soul: how I walked with the crowd, moved with them, the festive throng, to the House of God with joyous shouts of praise\u201d (5). It is the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba-sakh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> translated \u201cwith the throng,\u201d that drew my attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1942, Zerubavel Gilad composed the words to a song that became the hymn of the Palmach, the pre-state Jewish militia that was the forerunner of the IDF. Some of those words reflected the composer\u2019s familiarity with Tanakh. For instance, the line that reads \u201cFrom Metulah to the Negev, from the sea to the desert\u201d echoes God\u2019s reiteration of the boundaries of the Promised Land: \u201cFrom this desert and the Lebanon to the great Euphrates River\u2026 to the great sea\u201d (Joshua 1:4), and its continuation, \u201cevery good young man (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bachur va-tov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is called to arms\u201d resonates with the description of King Saul as \u201can incomparably good young man\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bachur va-tov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; 1 Samuel 9:2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when the song made its first public appearance a year later, its identification with the secretive militia that was operating in defiance of British authorities necessitated a deletion of the concluding words \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anu anu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (we are) <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha-Palmach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d In order to maintain the rhyme scheme, the substitute was \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anu ha-holkhim ba-sakh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which, I dare say, was not understood as a throng (as in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s\u2019khum<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a total) but as undercover (as in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sekhakh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sukkah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>image: reproduction of the original anthem, courtesy of the
