Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.

When and Why:
The sons of Korach wrote this psalm after they repented and were saved from the deadly punishment that their father received.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
This psalm begins the “second book”, and foretells and speaks of exiles to be suffered by the Jewish People. It was spoken by means of Ruach HaKodesh (Divine Inspiration), and expresses the depth of Israel’s longing for deliverance.

This psalm, consisting of twelve verses, is directly connected to the following psalm, chapter 42, consisting of five verses: they are therefore considered as one unit. Together they are subdivided into three parts. The first verse of Psalm 42 serves as an introduction. Each of the three main sections ends with a refrain.
In Psalm 42, verses 2-5, the psalmist describes their thirst for the living God, and then continues with a refrain, consisting of words of comfort, found in verse 6.
In Psalm 42, verses 7-11, the psalmists complain about their distress and repeat the refrain: “Why are you cast down, my soul? And why do you yearn for me?”, found in verse 12.
In Psalm 43, verses 1-4, the psalmists pray for deliverance and salvation, and conclude with the previous refrain, found in verse 5.

Technical Terminology:
Maskil–a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
One whose job was replaced by another (recite this, the previous, and the following chapter)–Verse 12 states: “Why are you cast down, my soul? And why do you year for me? Hope in God, for I will yet thank Him, for He is my deliverance, the light of my countenance, and my God.”

Where in the Siddur:
Parts of verses 6 and 12 are paraphrased in Lecha Dodi (one of the prayers of Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night service).

Biblical Places:
Hermon–a tall mountain in the most northern part of Israel
Yarden–Jordan–located to the east of Israel.
