Yet, amazingly, 41 chapters into the book of Psalms, this is the first time the word is used. In verse 14 “bless is the Lord, God of Israel, from all times past throughout all times to come. Amen and Amen.”

What exactly is Amen? The word appears only two times in the Torah. The first, is during the service of the sotah wife (suspected adulteress) in Numbers 5:22. Interestingly, it is only in response to each of the curses that the people respond “Amen”. While the root of the word “’-m-n” (meaning firm, steadfast, enduring, trustworthy, faithful, reliable) appears in different forms, the formulation “amen” appears in the Torah only in these two negative contexts, the accused wife and the curses. Perhaps King David is reclaiming the word. He is taking a word that was used as affirmation of negative sentiments, and repurposing it in a positive way for general prayer.
