David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nDavid wrote this when he was struggling with a serious illness.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Individual Lament&#8211;This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nIn this chapter, King David describes the happiness of the man, who, in his afflictions, turns to God for help. The Psalmist concludes with thanksgiving to the Almighty for enabling him to complete the \u201cfirst book\u201d of Psalms.<\/p>\n<p>This psalm consists of fourteen verses, subdivided into four parts. The first verse serves as an introduction.<br \/>\nIn verses 2-4, King David describes how God attends to the sick and heals them.<br \/>\nIn verses 5-11, he complains about those who speak evil about him.<br \/>\nIn verses 12-13, he expresses his confidence that God is pleased with him and that his prayer has been accepted.<br \/>\nIn verse 14, he concludes by declaring \u201cBaruch Hashem meiha\u2019olam v\u2019ad ha\u2019olam\u201d&#8211;\u201dBlessed is Adonoy, the God of Israel, from all times past through all times to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Technical Terminology: <\/em><br \/>\n<em>Maskil<\/em>&#8211;a discerning person, alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nTo request Heavenly advice for a bad dream (fast and recite this chapter 7 times)&#8211;Verse 4 states: \u201cAdonoy will support him on the bed of illness.\u201d<br \/>\nOne whose job was replaced by another (recite this and the next two chapters)&#8211;Verse 12 states: \u201cBy this I will know that You are delighted in me, that my enemy does not shout triumphantly over me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\nVerse 4 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShanah, as well as in <em>Tashlich<\/em> (a prayer recited on Rosh HaShanah afternoon, usually by a body of water, in which we beseech God to \u201ccast away\u201d our sins into the depths of the sea).<\/p>\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\nVerse 2: \u201cFortunate is he who understands the [needs of the] lowly.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Talmud Yerushalmi&#8211;Jerusalm Tamud, Shekalim 5:4, infers that this verse refers to one who contemplates how to perform the mitzvot (commandments) in the best possible manner.\u201d<br \/>\nVerse 4: \u201cAdonoy will support him on the bed of illness.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 12b, states that from this we learn that the Shechinah (Divine Presence) visits and rejuvenates that choleh (the sick).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excerpted from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Your Lips To God\u2019s Ears<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":79908,"id":79908,"title":"psalms -
