Georg Friedrich Handel, \u201cBlessed is he that considereth the poor,\u201d the opening movement from the Foundling Hospital Anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll begin with a spoiler. This piece is not actually a composition of Handel\u2019s, but a medley from other works of his, including the famous \u201cHallelujah Chorus\u201d from his \u201cMessiah,\u201d which provides a glorious ending for the piece<\/span><\/p>\n

Handel\u2019s stealing elements from himself – and from others – is well-known. So it came to be that Handel submitted this composition as a \u201cnew\u201d piece for a charity concert that he helped organize in 1749 for the orphanage known as the Foundling Hospital. The institution was located in Bloomsbury, and had been founded by Thomas Coram, a philanthropic sea captain, who recruited many contributions, including from the noted artist William Hogarth, and from Handel himself. Both of these well known artists had their own personal interests in addition to philanthropy, for participating: with Handel, he was worried that the fate of his oratorio \u201cMessiah\u201d might be similar to other operas that he had composed but that had gone out of style, and had become forgotten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The church that had been built as part of the orphanage was a perfect stage for him to perform the Anthem, which included a part of the Hallelujah chorus. The huge success of the work led him, in 1750, to stage the \u201cMessiah\u201d there, every year, to the roar of the crowds. To this day, the \u201cMessiah\u201d is the single most admired piece of vocal music in England, and the world over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Handel not only raised money, he himself gave, and even bequeathed the original score of the oratorio to the institution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Handel found the opening verses of Psalm 41 to be the best beginning for a composition that deals with generosity and lovingkindness. The paraphrase of the text that is sung preserves verse 2, but then emphasizes more God\u2019s kindness which is bestowed upon the poor, and babies and orphans, in order to match the text to the nature of the event for which it was composed. The verses are first sung in unison, then move to call and response, and a fugal structure. Above all, the work has an enthusiastic, even ecstatic tone that doesn\u2019t fade even for a moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
