Psalm 40:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm when he recovered from his sickness and brought thanksgiving offerings to God.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Thanksgiving–This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done for the individual.
\nPsalm of Wisdom–This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nDavid gives thanks to God for healing him from his maladies. His goal in proclaiming a new song (see verse 4) is to teach man that in times of deep affliction he should put his trust in God alone.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of eighteen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-11, King David thanks God for having delivered him in the past, and prays that God will save him from his current distress. He describes his previous deliverance and expresses his gratitude by observing God\u2019s law.
\nIn verses 12-18, the Psalmist expands upon his prayer for deliverance, and asks God to reveal His mercy.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor protection against evil spirits–Verse 18 states: \u201cmy Master, be aware of me; my help and my rescuer are You, my God, tarry not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 2 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf <\/em>of Rosh HaShana<\/em>.
\nVerse 12 comprises the second verse of V\u2019hu Rachum<\/em>, one of the passages of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning service), as well as the long Tachanun<\/em> (Penitential Prayer) following the Amidah of Shacharit, recited on Mondays and Thursdays.<\/p>\n
