Here, the psalmist makes a virtue of silence\u2014but under specific conditions and in limited circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n

I resolved I would watch my step lest I offend by my speech; I would keep my mouth muzzled while the wicked man was in my presence. I was dumb, silent; I was very still while my pain was intense. My mind was in a rage, my thoughts were all aflame; I spoke out. (2-4)<\/span><\/p>\n

Radak, relying on Job 2:10: \u201cDespite all this [i.e., his suffering], Job did not sin with his lips,\u201d interpreted the verse as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

I was careful not to speak improperly while I was in pain\u2026 and certainly not in the presence of the wicked\u2026 lest he rejoice in my suffering. [See 38:17: \u201cFor I fear they will rejoice over me.\u201d] Even though my pain was intense, I was careful not to speak out lest my pain affect my speech even accidentally, because the intensity of my illness would inflame my words.<\/span><\/p>\n

An alternative explanation, based on Rashi, would be that he imposed silence on himself out of regard for the honor of Heaven lest the wicked witness his frustration with his fate and hear him speak harshly to God as in his demand: \u201cTell me, O LORD, what my term is, what is the measure of my days\u201d (5).<\/span><\/p>\n

In verse 13 , the psalmist repeated his request: \u201cHear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my cry; do not disregard my tears\u2026\u201d By rearranging the English translation to mimic the sequence of the Hebrew original, we can see a significant\u2014 albeit unusual\u2014 poetic form: a chiasm followed by a parallelism. A chiastic, or diagonal, structure, is called that after the Greek letter whose shape is an X.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
