Psalm 39:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.
\nPossibly composed for Yeduthun-a noted singer and composer of several psalms.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm when he was sick and needed God\u2019s help to recover from his illness.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nKing David\u2019s suffering prompts him to realize how fleeting man\u2019s time is on this earth. He pleads to God to allow him to recover from his suffering, so that he may return to fulfilling His will.<\/p>\n

This psalm contains fourteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-4, King David apologizes for the harsh words he is about to speak to God.
\nIn verses 5-7, he laments that man is driven by vanity.
\nIn verses 8-14, he expresses his hope for God and offers a prayer to Him.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\nSelah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah<\/em>\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor spiritual growth–Verse 14 states: \u201cLet me alone so that I may become strong, before I go away and cease to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 8 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShana.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 3: \u201cI became mute with silence, I was silent from the [hope of] good things.\u201d
\nThe Tamud, Berachot 5a, deduces from here that one who has the opportunity to study Torah but does not do so, brings suffering upon himself. The word \u201ctov<\/em>\u201d–\u201dgood\u201d here is interpreted as referring to Torah study.
\nVerse 7: \u201cSurely in darkness does man make his way, surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heaps up riches and does not know who will gather them.\u201d
\nThe Talmud Yerushalmi–Jerusalem Talmud, Shekalim 2:5, deduces that when repeating something one heard in learning, he should imagine that the one who originally shared these words is standing before him.
\nVerse 13: \u201cHere my prayer, Adonoy, and give ear to my cry; to my tears be not silent.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 32b, teaches: \u201cThe gates of prayer were closed since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash<\/em> (Holy Temple); even so, the gates of tears were not.\u201d The Talmud is instructing us that if one cries out to Hashem his prayers will indeed be heard. (See the Talmud Bava Metzia, 49a, for more on this idea).<\/p>\n
