My wounds stink and fester because of my folly (6). I am all bent and bowed; I walk about in gloom all day long (7). For my sinews are full of fever; there is no soundness in my flesh (8).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note the somewhat unusual literary structure here. These four verses are not linked consecutively, but alternately. V.5, which states that sins are a burden too heavy to bear, leads to v.7, which describes how he is bent over. V.6, which describes his festering wounds, is followed by v.8, which speaks of his feverish body.\u00a0 (<\/span>In the next psalm, we will call attention to another unusual structure, called chiastic (diagonal) after the Greek letter whose shape is an X).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When one experiences feelings like those described here, one might turn to others for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support. As Radak commented (v.12): \u201cPeople who are filled with pain usually are supported by friends and relatives who are loathe to see their distress.\u201d Our psalmist, however, was sorely disappointed to find, \u201cMy friends and companions stand back from my affliction; my kinsmen stand far off\u201d (12).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His growing disappointment can be discerned in the three increasing gradations of relationships he mentions: friends, companions, and kinsmen. One expects less of casual acquaintances, more of bosom companions, and most of relatives. Here, all were sorely disappointing, leaving him no alternative \u201cbut I wait for You, O LORD; You will answer, O Lord, my God\u201d
