The first is the way that the imagery pulls on the senses. Here the sense of smell is evoked; in Psalm 38 it says \u201cMy wounds have oozed forth and putrefied [my flesh]&#8230;\u201d The image there is so visually repulsive, and the wording calls forth the sense of sight.
