Andrea Gabrieli: <\/span>Domine, ne in furore <\/span><\/i>(\u201cO LORD, do not punish me in wrath\u201d) for six voices (beginning at 09:21).<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm is one of the seven chapters of \u201cPsalms on Repentance\u201d (see <\/span>previously Ps. 32<\/span><\/a>) for which church composers wrote often, for the ceremonies where a confession of sins was central. The collection <\/span>Psalmi Davidici<\/em> <\/span>by Gabrieli includes these seven psalms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea Gabrieli (c. 1533 – 1585) is one of the main representatives of the Venetian school of the music of the Italian Renaissance. In those days, Venice was a rich city-state with prosperous merchants, and a maritime empire. The sumptuous basilica of San Marco, where Gabrieli was the organist, allowed for groundbreaking musical experiments that were a central factor in the development of the Baroque style. Gabrieli greatly expanded the choir, added more musical instruments, and together with his nephew and protege, Giovanni Gabrieli, began to use the space by setting one group against the other, antiphonally. The Gabrielis had strong ties to the court in Munich, Bavaria, and with <\/span>Orlande de Lassus<\/span><\/a> who was active there at that time. It could be that Gabrieli\u2019s \u201cPenitential Psalms of David\u201d (1583) were composed in conjunction with de Lassus\u2019 work on the same topic, completed approximately a year later.<\/span><\/p>\n

The composition, in the conservative Renaissance style, includes the entire text of the psalm in its Latin version, from the Vulgate. Gabrieli divides the psalm into five parts. First, \u201cO LORD, do not punish me in wrath;\u201d the second – \u201cMy wounds stink and fester\u201d (6); then \u201cO Lord, You are aware of all my entreaties\u201d (10); fourth, \u201cBut I am like a deaf man, unhearing\u201d (14); and finally, \u201cFor I am on the verge of collapse;\u201d (18 until the end).<\/span><\/p>\n

The music in its Renaissance style, excels in its complex weave of voices and woodwinds, which chase after one another, while the music occasionally includes translations of the meaning of the text into tonal form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
