David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
In this psalm, King David reminds us that God afflicts man because of his transgressions, and further prays to God for salvation from his afflictions. David’s additional intent here is to instill in man the responsibility to bless God for the bad just as one blesses Him for the good.
This psalm consists of twenty-three verses, subdivided into five parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
In verses 2-8, King David describes his various illnesses and ailments, attributing them to God.
In verses 9-13, he expresses his loneliness.
In verses 14-16, he gives voice to the tension between his silence and his hope.
In verses 17-21, he elaborates upon his fear of his enemies due to his sins.
In verses 22 and 23, he concludes by pleading for salvation.

Technical Terminology:
Lehazkir–For Remembrance

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
Against people who speak evil gossip–Verse 13 states: “and those who seek my hurt speak of destruction, and upon decites, all day do they meditate.”

Where in the Siddur:
Verse 22 is included in the long version of the Tachanun (Penitential Prayer), recited on Mondays and Thursdays upon conclusion of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Shacharit (morning service).

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 11: “My heart is engulfed in grief, my strength has forsaken me.”
The Talmud, Gittin 70a, deduces from here that three things weaken the body of a person: fear, travel and sin.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
