Bach (in the famous chorale from “St. Matthew’s Passion”), and so, the choice to use it was a significant one for a composer like Max Reger (1873-1916), who saw Bach as a celestial figure, from whom he drew all his inspiration.

Reger, a native of Bavaria, was a unique musical genius: a virtuoso pianist and organist, who appeared in concerts throughout Europe, a dedicated teacher of piano and composition, and in addition to these demanding professions, was also a prolific composer, who wrote in every possible genre, with the exception of opera.

As we have noted, the object of his great admiration was the musical heritage of J.S. Bach, and the forms and genres of the Baroque period. His compositions were known for their complexity, their daring nature and the difficulty to absorb them during one hearing. He presaged the development of modernism in music of the beginning of the century. Reger was well known for his hot temper (especially to unfavorable critics), and his unhealthy lifestyle, which led to his untimely death at the age of 43.

Against this background, the verse from Ps. 37 that is sung is exceptional in it simplicity and pleasantness. Indeed, Reger had a romantic and intimate side, especially in his songs. The work was originally arranged for soprano and alto (in the clip we hear a tenor and a bass). It was presented as a “wedding song” to Elsa von Bagenski (von Bercken) in 1902, for agreeing to wed him after years of courtship. They married, even though Reger was a Catholic, and Elsa was a divorced protestant, which led to a rift between Reger and his family, and his excommunication from the Catholic church.

Max Reger, Psalm 37:5 Befiehl dem Herrn deine Wege : Ensemble minstrel plays

"":null
