Our psalm opens with an acknowledgment of the power of the evil inclination to seduce people to sin: \u201cI know what Transgression says to the wicked; he has no sense of the dread of God, because its speech is seductive to him till his iniquity be found out and he be hated\u201d (2-3). In contrast to those whose \u201cwords are evil and deceitful\u201d (4) and who \u201cabhor no evil\u201d (5), the psalmist extols God\u2019s virtues:<\/span><\/p>\n

O LORD, Your faithfulness (<\/span>chesed<\/span><\/em>) reaches to heaven; Your steadfastness (<\/span>emunah<\/span><\/em>) to the sky; Your beneficence (<\/span>tzedek<\/span><\/em>) is like the high mountains; Your justice (<\/span>mishpat<\/span><\/em>) like the great deep; man and beast You deliver, O LORD. (6-7)<\/span><\/p>\n

This quartet of divine attributes recurs in \u201cRighteousness (<\/span>tzedek<\/span><\/em>) and justice (<\/span>mishpat<\/span><\/em>) are the base of Your throne; steadfast love (<\/span>chesed<\/span><\/em>) and faithfulness (<\/span>emet<\/span><\/em>) stand before You\u201d (89:15, albeit in a slightly different sequence and with <\/span>emet<\/span><\/em> standing in for <\/span>emunah<\/span><\/em>). Righteousness and justice, as a pair, also occur in Psalms 97:2 as well as in Proverbs 1:3 and 2:9.<\/span><\/p>\n

The allusion to divinity (<\/span>eil<\/span><\/em>) as a form of hyperbole (\u201cthe high mountains\u201d) was addressed in <\/span>our comments to Psalms 16<\/span><\/a>; the use of \u201cthe great deep\u201d (<\/span>t\u2019hom rabah<\/span><\/em>) recalls the poetic description of the inception of the flood when: \u201cAll the fountains of the great deep burst apart, and the floodgates of the sky broke open\u201d (Gen. 7:11). The description of God\u2019s beneficence as \u201clike the high mountains\u201d and its contrasting depiction of His justice as \u201cthe great deep\u201d is an expression of all-inclusivity, reminiscent of \u201cfrom the smallest (<\/span>katan<\/span><\/em>) to the largest (<\/span>gadol<\/span><\/em>)\u201d (Gen. 19:11, or reversed, as in 2 Chr. 34:30) and \u201cfrom east to west\u201d (Malachi 1:11, Psalms 50:1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":82527,"id":82527,"title":"ps36-high
