(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/585\/post\/80984\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We encountered one previously &#8211; Psalm 18 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; and took note of its striking similarity to the victory song recorded in 2 Samuel 22.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The present psalm commences with a pronounced martial theme: \u201cO LORD, strive with my adversaries, give battle to my foes, take up shield and buckler, and come to my defense\u201d (1-2). However, it quickly transitions from armed conflict (\u201cReady the spear and javelin against my pursuers,\u201d 3) to a skirmish of a more personal sort (\u201cLet those who seek my life be frustrated and put to shame; let those who plan to harm me fall back in disgrace,\u201d 4). Moreover, this adversity appears to be of the spiritual variety, since David\u2019s wish for them is \u201cLet them be as chaff in the wind\u201d (5), which resonates with his description of the wicked in 1:4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This provides an opportunity to reflect on a proposition that can be summed up in the verse: \u201cBehold Your enemies, O Lord, behold Your enemies will perish, all evildoers will be scattered\u201d (Psalms 92:10). In other words, the wicked are, ipso facto, God\u2019s enemies, and, therefore, they are David\u2019s enemies as well. Hence, \u201cLet not my treacherous enemies rejoice over me\u201d (19) is followed by \u201cFor they do not offer amity, but devise fraudulent schemes against harmless folk\u201d (20).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWake, rouse Yourself for my cause (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mishpati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), for my claim, O my God and my Lord! Take up my cause (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shofteini<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), O Lord my God, as You are beneficent, and let them not rejoice over me\u201d (23-24). While the translation\u2019s use of \u201ccause\u201d is accurate, it obscures the fact that the Hebrew uses the verbal root for judgment. David\u2019s request of God is not for military intervention but judicial vindication.
