For this, he chose verse 9 from Psalm 34.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The work consists essentially of one long melody, sung alternately by the a solo soprano (or a small ensemble of sopranos), and the choir. The melodic style, and the choral arrangement don\u2019t deviate hardly at all from the British folk music tradition, and thus also sound very typically \u201cVaughn Williams.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, Vaughn Williams had a reputation (not always positive) of being \u201cMr. England\u201d &#8211; as if his work was part of the landscape of the green pastures the English countryside, filled with bucolic, cud-chewing cows. While he might not have objected to this, it does not do justice to the breadth of his work. In addition to his very serious study of British folk music, which he then integrated into his compositions, and to his rather pastoral tendencies, several of his symphonies are decidedly untranquil, and are surprisingly dynamic and provocative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This work has become especially popular, and there are no amateur choirs or schoolchildren in England who have not sung it at one time or another.
