Psalm 34:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm of thanks to God, after escaping from Saul and arriving safely in the Philistine city of Gat.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Thanksgiving–This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done for the individual.
\nPsalm of Wisdom–This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.
\nAcrostic–A literary composition in which the writer has used the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in their order as the initial letters for a sequence of verses.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm relates David\u2019s miraculous salvation from the hands of Achish, king of Gath.
\nThe verses are arranged alphabetically (excluding the letter vav), indicating the need for every man to praise God.
\nThis psalm consists of twenty-three verses, subdivided into five parts.
\nVerse 1 serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-4, King David praises God.
\nIn verses 5-8, he speaks of his deliverance from all the calamities of which he was fearful.
\nIn verses 9-11, he calls upon the congregation of Israel to fear God and seek His refuge.
\nIn verses 12-15, he outlines the principles of conduct that a God-fearing person should follow.
\nIn verses 16-23, the Psalmist praises God who destroys the wicked and saves the righteous.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor traveling on a journey-The opening verse describes the sudden, successful exit of King David from Avimelech, the Philistine king.
\nBefore delivering a speech–Verse 5 states: \u201cfor all my fears He saved me\u201d, a reference to David\u2019s fear of speaking up before Avimelech.
\nBefore facing an important authority–Verse 18 states: \u201cThey cry out and Adonoy hears and from all their troubles, He saves them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited in its entirety as part of Pesukei Dezimra<\/em> (introductory Verses of Praise to the Shacharit morning services) of Shabbat, Yom Tov (Festivals), and Hoshana Rabbah.
\nVerse 4 is recited upon removing the Torah scroll from the Aron Kodesh<\/em> (Holy Ark).
\nVerses 10 & 11 are part of the final paragraph of Birkat HaMazon <\/em>(Grace after Meals).
\nVerse 14 forms the basis of the closing paragraph of the Amidah (Silent Meditation).<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:<\/em>
\nAvimelech–a Philistine king who freed King David when David disguised himself by pretending to be insane. Avimelech is technically a title of all Philistine kings, much as Pharaoh is a title of all Egyptian kings.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 4: \u201cDeclare the greatness of Adonoy with me, and let us exalt His Name together.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 45a, instructs that three who eat bread together are required to join in zimun<\/em>–an invitation to bless God as a community. The Talmud further deduces that it is preferable to recite Birkat HaMazon <\/em>(Grace after Meals) in a group of three or more. Furthermore, three who eat together are not permitted to break up the group and recite Birkat HaMazon<\/em> individually.<\/p>\n
