John Williams, Exsultate Justi (\u201cSing forth, O you righteous,\u201d) from the soundtrack of the movie <\/span>The <\/span><\/i>Empire of the Sun<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

John Williams (b. 1932) is known as a composer of music for film, whose style is neo-romantic and utilizes rich orchestral and choral arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n

The three focal points of his work are his collaboration with Steven Spielberg in most of his movies (his soundtrack for <\/span>Jaws<\/em> <\/span>won him his first Oscar), his work with John Lucas in the <\/span>Star Wars<\/span><\/em> series, and the soundtracks he wrote for the <\/span>Harry Potter<\/em> <\/span>movies. Likewise, he composed the unforgettable soundtracks to <\/span>Superman, Lost in Space<\/span><\/em>, and many more. His partnership with Spielberg allowed him to express his romantic spirit, and the childlike innocence and the passion for fantasy that Spielberg\u2019s movies are noted for – no matter how realistic the script.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, Williams is a pianist, a conductor (his main job is with the Boston Pops) and a composer of concert music.<\/span><\/p>\n

The choral work Exsultate Justi (\u201cSing forth, O you righteous\u201d) is based on hte opening verses of Psalm 33. It is not an exact quote, but a Latin paraphrase. Actually, all the elements of the verses are present, just not in their original order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The melody is quite simple, and catchy. The song appeared first in the soundtrack of the movie <\/span>Empire of the <\/span>Sun<\/span><\/em>, the ninth joint work of Spielberg and William (1987). It accompanies (and not completely successfully) Jamie\u2019s triumphal bicycle ride in the abandoned American army base, just before being reunited with his parents. The original album has on it, along with the soundtrack, the original version of the song, which is the one performed in concert halls.<\/span><\/p>\n
