Initially, he was struck dumb (\u201cI said nothing,\u201d 3), with the accompanying sensation of withering away: \u201cFor night and day Your hand lay heavy on me; my vigor [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leshadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, literally moisture] waned as in the summer drought\u201d (4). Here, we are reminded of Psalm 1 and the description of the righteous man as \u201ca tree planted beside streams of water\u201d (1:3), one of whose qualities was its retention of its moisture that ensured its \u201cfoliage never faded\u201d (ibid).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, he confessed, saying: \u201cI acknowledged my sin to You; I did not cover up my guilt\u201d (5), just as we recite the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">viduy<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (confession) during the penitential days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom HaKippurim. Indeed, the classic penitential process is said to comprise three stages: regret over one\u2019s sins, confession, and resolution to improve. We have followed our psalmist through the first two; can we trace his steps through the third as well?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arguably, this is the intent of his next words: \u201cTherefore let every faithful man (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chasid<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) pray to You upon discovering [his sin], that the rushing mighty waters not overtake him\u201d (6), setting his future place among the faithful. Once he has finished his prayer, he feels the return of his confidence: \u201cMany are the torments of the wicked, but he who trusts in the Lord shall be surrounded with favor\u201d (10). Who is the one \u201cwho trusts in the Lord\u201d? The penitent, who can now call upon others \u201cto rejoice in the Lord and exult\u201d (11) along with
