In this third straight Psalm utilizing imagery of hiddenness, the psalmist completes the evolution of what it means for God to hide. This psalm discusses the troubled path of a sinner’s journey to confessing their sin. At first, the sinner is content to have their sin be hidden. they are fortunate that no one knows of their transgression. But soon, that hidden sin starts to eat at them, and weigh heavy on them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally they call out to God. They want to admit their sin to God and experience God\u2019s forgiveness. “For this let every man of devotion pray to you, in a time when you may be found. Indeed when mighty water threatens they will not reach him. You are my shelter (<\/span>seter<\/span><\/em>), from distress preserve me, with a glad song you envelope me.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In chapter 30, it seemed that God turns His face from the people in anger. They fear when God isn’t there. In chapter 31 we learned that God protects those that reach out to Him even when He is hidden by protecting them where He is hidden. Here, in chapter 32,the psalmist implores the sinner to pray to God when God may be found.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, we know from 30 and 31 that this is a red herring. God can always be found by those who need him. And now, when they cry out to God, God will not hide them away, but instead He will shelter them outright. God’s shelter is not something to be hidden in a treasure house out of view. God’s shelter is out front and ready to withstand the mighty waters that threaten his people.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
