The psalms are also among the most set to music (such as De Profundis, Out of the Depths, Ps 130). From all the works that included all seven psalms<em>, <\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penitential Psalms<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 1584, by Orlande de Lassus (1532-1594) is the best-known and most appreciated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singers delight to this day in Lassus\u2019 secular songs, which are full of vitality and humor. His religious works, too, excel in a surprising lightness and elegance, especially in contrast with the rather severe medium and strict laws of ritual composition in the Renaissance. This led to his rapid rise in Italy as a singer, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maestro di capella<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a composer, and to his no less rapid decision to abandon everything and return to his native Flanders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his travels throughout Europe, he ended up choosing Munich, where he settled down. His creative output was prodigious, and we can get an inkling of this from his <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penitential Psalms<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 32 is actually a large collection of motets, with each being devoted to a verse, or even half a verse from the psalm, and not a single word is overlooked. In the highly emotional process of repentance that the sinner undergoes, there is a huge variety of vocal composition (from two to five voices), and only in the final sections is the sound expanded to six. This is in the concluding verse of the chapter, and the two pieces that make up the doxology &#8211; the praise for the foundations of Christianity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The text (which is visible in the video) is in Latin, but since each section is clearly about an individual verse, it\u2019s not hard to follow along in the Hebrew original, or in English translation.
