David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nDavid wrote this psalm after his sin with with Bathsheba as a way to bolster his faith in the power of penance and in God\u2019s readiness to forgive sinners who repent.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Wisdom&#8211;This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nKing David addresses those whose sins have caused them to despair of personal salvation. Nothing can stand in the way of repentance, he tells them. If one admits his sins, expresses regret, and bridles his passions, there indeed is hope!<br \/>\nThis psalm consists of eleven verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\nVerses 1 &amp; 2 serve as an introduction, with declarations of \u201cFortunate is he.\u201d \u201cFortunate is the man.\u201d<br \/>\nIn verses 3-7, King David describes his suffering, confession and ensuing salvation.<br \/>\nIn verses 8-11, he humbly acknowledges lessons learned, with a call to rejoice in God.<\/p>\n<p><em>Technical Terminology<\/em>:<br \/>\n<em>Maskil<\/em>&#8211;a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim&#8211;When to Say<\/em>:<br \/>\nFor mercy (say daily)&#8211;Verse 10 states: \u201cBut he who trusts in Adonoy kindness surrounds him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur<\/em>:<br \/>\nVerse 8 is found in <em>Yesod HaTeshuvah<\/em> (Foundation of Repentance) recited in some congregations on the eve of Rosh HaShana.
