You want it both ways, to be the sun

But you won\u2019t get it

\nHermeneutical fragrance<\/p>\n

Drenching every event, trivial and tragic,

Torched the trees
\nOf life and knowledge,
\nAlthough I\u2019ve made a decent living<\/p>\n

\nSomewhere close to my mouth, the smoke of you

To notice. You woo me with the fruit
\nOf your intimacy, infinity thick
\nAs star-sparked honey, fine-toothed
\ncombs<\/p>\n

Of forgiveness, the barely-remembered
\nCoo of a mother
\nSinging me to sleep on her shoulder,<\/p>\n

My first bicycle, the welling sun-warmed
\nStrawberry juice
\nOf forever. You wash the dying<\/p>\n

Off my hands
\nAnd stand there
\nWith an indecipherable expression<\/p>\n

As I die again. No wonder
\nI can\u2019t stand you. No wonder I crave your presence, apple blazing<\/p>\n

In the blazing crotch
\nOf history\u2019s burning branches.<\/p>\n

This psalm is one of opposites, the \u201cyou\u201d in the poem wants to be \u201cthe sun and the clouds that smother it, the heart and the heart that breaks it, meaningless suffering and the truth that redeems it.\u201d Psalm 29 is describing all the various attributes of God, which include opposites such as \u201cthe God of glory thunders, the LORD, over the mighty waters\u201d and \u201cThe voice of the LORD kindles flames of fire.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n
