The phrase: \u201cInto Your hand I commend my spirit\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 31:6<\/span><\/a>) is incorporated into the<\/span> prayers recited at bedtime<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Talmud<\/span> Bavli Berakhot 5a<\/span><\/a> preserves an opinion that these prayers, known collectively as<\/span>Keri\u2019at Shema al Ha-Mitah<\/span><\/a><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> are not required of a <\/span>Talmid Chakham<\/span><\/em> (who would be constantly occupied with Torah until he is about to fall asleep at night —<\/span> Steinsaltz<\/span><\/a>). However, such a Torah Scholar is required to recite before going to bed at night at least one \u201cverse of supplication\u201d (<\/span>pesuqa\u2019 de-rachamey<\/span><\/em>), such as: \u201cInto Your hand I commend my spirit\u201d. This phrase is also poetically adapted in<\/span> Adon Olam<\/span><\/a>: \u201cIn his hand, I commend my spirit. [For] when I sleep, [I know that] I will wake. And with my spirit is my body; God is for me, and I will not be afraid\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shakespeare, in<\/span> Richard the Third<\/span><\/a>, adapts and expands on this Biblical phrase: \u201cTo Thee I do commend my watchful soul \/ Ere I let fall the windows of mine eyes \/ Sleeping and waking, O, defend me still!\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tehillim 25:2<\/span><\/a> elaborates on the phrase \u201cI commend my spirit\u201d. In the way of the world, items are entrusted to someone who may switch one deposited item with another (so that those who deposited the items may not get their own property back again). But God is not like that for \u201cthe Lord is a God of truth\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 31:6<\/span><\/a>) (i.e. He may be trusted to correctly return each person\u2019s individual spirit upon awakening). Has it ever happened that a person awakens in the morning and seeking his soul does not find it?! Or that a person awakes to find his soul in someone else or someone else\u2019s soul in him?! No! for \u201cthe Lord is a God of truth\u201d. Furthermore, brand-new items entrusted on deposit to a human being may be returned after some time in a worn and dilapidated state. But tired souls entrusted to God\u2019s care are returned, after a night\u2019s sleep, in a renewed state. Be it known unto you that one works all day so that his soul is exhausted and worn out. But when he sleeps at night, he entrusts his soul to God, so that in the morning it is returned to his body renewed and refreshed.<\/span><\/p>\n
