David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When and Why:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David wrote this psalm when he was escaping from Saul. In it, he prays that God should save him from his enemies and pursuants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genre:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm of Individual Lament&#8211;This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter Summary:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To merit Divine Protection, even though supernatural means, one must completely trust in God. Here, David thanks the Almighty for having miraculously saved him from Saul, and further prays for God\u2019s deliverance from all other adversaries as well.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm consists of twenty-five verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as a heading.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-9, King David pleads for salvation and expresses gratitude for his rescue.\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 10-25, he beseeches God to be gracious to him in his distress, and again pleads for salvation and for the downfall of the wicked. He then once again expresses thanks for his deliverance, and calls to those who fear God to love Him and put their trust in Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For protection against the evil eye&#8211;Verses 14 and 15 state: \u201cFor I have heard the whispering of many, terror all around; when they took counsel together against me, they planned to take my soul [life]. But, as for me, in You I have trusted, Adonoy, I said, \u201cYou are my God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 6 is one of the verses comprising <em>Baruch Hashem Le\u2019olam<\/em>, one of the blessings surrounding Shema of Ma\u2019ariv (evening service).<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 6 is also recited as one of the verses of the longer version of the bedtime Shema (Talmud, Berachot, 5a).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud on Tehillim:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 13: \u201cI am forgotten like a dead man from the heart, I have become like a lost vessel.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud, Berachot 58b, states: \u201cThe dead is not forgotten from the heart until after twelve months.\u201d The verse draws an analogy between forgetting a dead person and abandoning a lost object. From here the Talmud deduces that just as a lost object is abandoned by its owner only after twelve months, so too, the loss of a loved one only leaves one\u2019s heart after twelve months.
