It generated some of the humorous situations the characters find themselves in, and also gave me a source for the details I could use to build the characters. The interesting challenge for me in writing it was to make the father, the narrator of the story, less knowledgeable about Jewish matters than I am.

In one scene Frank and Samantha prepare a Shabbat dinner – not a common occurrence for her parents – and get into a discussion of how Frank’s lessons are going. As part of a service given over to heaping praise on the Creator, it’s a moment that seems to be saying, “Hey, You seem to like our worship service. Won’t be able to do it when I’m dead. Maybe You should keep me around for a while.” The psalm is attributed to David, but to me it sounded more like Groucho Marx or Woody Allen, the latter of whom said, “I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying.”

Given that having a sense of humor is considered a defining characteristic by many Jews, it seems odd that the examples of humor in the Bible are few and far between. It’s usually limited to the story of Balaam’s ass and, perhaps, some parts of the Book of Esther. So as a writer and reader of humorous prose I treasure Psalm 30.

I like to think that David is winking at us.

As for Frank, they ask him what his rabbi thinks of his novel interpretation.
