His descent to the latter is mirrored by his father Jacob&#8217;s refusal to be comforted in his loss, and his insistence that he would join his son in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Bereshit 37:35)&#8211; paralleling the psalmist\u2019s rise from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheol <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>in the beginning of Ps. 30:4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 30:10&#8211; &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah betza b&#8217;dami<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/What gain is there from my death&#8221;&#8211; evokes Judah&#8217;s &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah betza<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; as he convinces his brothers to sell rather than kill Joseph (Genesis 37:26; I owe this observation to R. David Silber).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the use of the phrase &#8220;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitakhta saki<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; in 30:12, in context referring to the removal of the mourner&#8217;s sackcloth, reminds us of Jacob&#8217;s donning of sackcloth in Genesis 37:35, as well as the scenes in which the brothers open their sacks and discover their money-bags, and later Joseph&#8217;s silver goblet, therein (see ibid. 42:35).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter, the psalmist is framing his own experiences with those of Jacob and, primarily, of Joseph. Descent and rising; loss and restoration; sackcloth and rejoicing&#8211; these experiences find their primary expression in these patriarchal figures. Linking his own descent to theirs both thickens the evocation of despair and buttresses the psalmist\u2019s trust in eventual salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image:
