Though its authorship is traditionally ascribed to King David, the implicit protagonists of Psalm 30 are none other than the patriarchal characters Jacob and Joseph.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 30:4 describes the psalmist going down into the <\/span>bor<\/span><\/em>\/pit, a reference to Joseph’s descent into the pit, itself symbolic of his descent to Egypt, Pharaoh’s jail, and indeed the metaphoric grave. His descent to the latter is mirrored by his father Jacob’s refusal to be comforted in his loss, and his insistence that he would join his son in <\/span>Sheol<\/span><\/em> (Bereshit 37:35)– paralleling the psalmist\u2019s rise from <\/span>Sheol <\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>in the beginning of Ps. 30:4.<\/span><\/p>\n

Psalm 30:10– “<\/span>Mah betza b’dami<\/span><\/em>\/What gain is there from my death”– evokes Judah’s “<\/span>Mah betza<\/span><\/em>” as he convinces his brothers to sell rather than kill Joseph (Genesis 37:26; I owe this observation to R. David Silber).<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, the use of the phrase “<\/span>pitakhta saki<\/span><\/em>” in 30:12, in context referring to the removal of the mourner’s sackcloth, reminds us of Jacob’s donning of sackcloth in Genesis 37:35, as well as the scenes in which the brothers open their sacks and discover their money-bags, and later Joseph’s silver goblet, therein (see ibid. 42:35).<\/span><\/p>\n

In this chapter, the psalmist is framing his own experiences with those of Jacob and, primarily, of Joseph. Descent and rising; loss and restoration; sackcloth and rejoicing– these experiences find their primary expression in these patriarchal figures. Linking his own descent to theirs both thickens the evocation of despair and buttresses the psalmist\u2019s trust in eventual salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n
