In the dim light you know only that you are wet, muddy and in pain. There is neither a visible way out, nor any means of communication. Time passes. Hurting, grieving, despairing, you hear noise above you. Looking up you see something, maybe a large crate, being lowered in your direction. You gather all your remaining strength and climb in. The rescuers pull you towards the light, and are waiting with essential care when you reach the top. As you step out into the sun, you are filled with gratitude and burst into profuse praise for the rescuers who have come to your aid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the experience of the psalmist in Psalm 30. Verse 2 features an unusual word \u05d3\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05ea\u05b8\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9, translated here \u201clifted me up\u201d and by Robert Alter as \u201cdrew me up.\u201d It refers to a specific kind of lifting up, pulling water up in a bucket (see Exodus 2:16, 19). It is a very physical form of being lifted up, of being saved. The psalmist recounts many types of trouble a person can encounter: enemies, illness and falling into the depths, whether a literal pit or figurative depths of despair. But all is not lost; crying out to God brings relief.\u00a0 Truly thankful, the psalmist wants to tell everyone about it, and have them join the praise: \u201cO you faithful of the Eternal, sing to God, and praise God\u2019s holy name\u201d (v. 5).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once I experienced this psalm truly come to life. It was a weekday minyan being led by my friend Susie Dvoskin, who was in the year of mourning after her daughter Tamar was killed by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bicycle. She slowed down towards the end the psalm, emphasized (in Hebrew) \u201cYou turned my lament into dancing\u2026. \u201c and turned to address the minyan: \u201cThis is my life now: I \u2018lie down weeping at nightfall; but at dawn there are shouts of joy.\u2019\u201d In the weekday morning service, Psalm 30 is followed by a Mourner\u2019s Kaddish. The Kaddish that morning felt different, and in my heart Psalm 30 will always belong to Susie and Tamar, now both of blessed memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Susie and
