This practice invites the question: How does this psalm connect with the onset of Shabbat?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assignment of specific psalms to be sung by Levites on different days of the week was determined during the Second Temple era, as attested to by the Mishnah (Tamid 7:4), which assigned Psalm 92 to \u201cthe Sabbath Day\u201d on the grounds of its superscription \u201cA psalm, a song, for the Sabbath day.\u201d That psalm\u2019s sevenfold use of the Tetragrammaton (the 4-letter divine name) may also have played a role in its designation for the seventh day of the week. (Recall, too, that the Amidah, the liturgical centerpiece of every prayer service that usually consists of 18\/19 blessings, is reduced on Shabbat to 7.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing this in mind, an examination of our psalm reveals a comparable heptad (use of seven): the expression \u201cthe voice of the Lord.\u201d Given the biblical and rabbinic emphasis on \u201cspeech\u201d as the medium of creation,* our psalm shares with Psalm 92 the assumption of the typological (symbolic) number seven as an allusion to the primordial creation that climaxed on Shabbat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Biblically, see Ps. 33:9: \u201cFor He spoke, and it was.\u201d Rabbinically, see Mishnah Avot 5:1: \u201cIn ten utterances was the world
