In our psalm the Davidic poet calls upon the Heavenly Host to acclaim God\u2019s power as revealed in the thunderstorm: \u201cA psalm of David. Ascribe to the Lord, O divine beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name. Bow down to the Lord, majestic in holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters. The God of glory thunders, the Lord, over the mighty waters\u201d (<\/span>29:1-3<\/span><\/a>). This Psalm is recited frequently, in its entirety, in<\/span> Jewish Liturgy<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

British Chief Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz comments on the recitation of this Psalm in the <\/span>Kabbalat Shabbat <\/span><\/i>service (<\/span>The Authorized Daily Prayer Book <\/span><\/i>1948, pp. 354-355):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThunder-Storms of tropical intensity are frequent in Palestine in winter, and the Israelite saw in them special manifestations of Divine might and majesty. <\/span>Bney \u2018Eylim <\/span><\/em>\u2013 <\/span><\/i>\u201cdivine beings\u201d (which he translates \u201cSons of Might\u201d) refer to the angels, standing in God\u2019s immediate presence and watching the storm, who are called upon by the poet to praise Him whose glory is seen in the storm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On the final verse of our psalm: \u201cMay the Lord grant strength to His people. May the Lord bless His people with peace\u201d (<\/span>29:11<\/span><\/a>), Rabbi Hertz adds that the God who rules and stills the storm, is the same Who blesses His people with moral strength and lasting peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talmud Bavli Megillah 17b<\/span><\/a> (see also<\/span> Rosh HaShanah 32a<\/span><\/a>) learns the order of the first three blessings of the <\/span>Amidah<\/span><\/em> from the first verses of our Psalm. The first blessing, <\/span>Avot<\/span><\/em> (\u201cPatriarchs\u201d) is related to: \u201cAscribe to the Lord, O Sons of Might (i.e. \u201cThe Patriarchs\u201d) (<\/span>29:1<\/span><\/a>). The second blessing of the <\/span>Amidah, Gevurot<\/em> <\/span>(\u201cMighty Deeds\u201d) is related to: \u201cAscribe to the Lord glory and strength\u201d (<\/span>29:1<\/span><\/a>). The third blessing of the <\/span>Amidah, Qedushot<\/em> <\/span>(also called <\/span>Kedushat ha-Shem<\/span><\/em> \u2013 \u201cthe Sanctification of the Name”) is related to: \u201cBow down to the Lord, majestic in holiness\u201d (<\/span>29:2<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Berakhot 28b<\/span><\/a> notes that the 18 Blessings of the <\/span>Amidah<\/em> <\/span>prayer correspond to the 18 mentions of God\u2019s Name (\u201cLord\u201d) in<\/span> Psalm 29<\/span><\/a>. It also notes that there are 18 mentions of God in the three paragraphs of the Shema.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tanhuma Shemot 25:5<\/span><\/a> notes that the verse: \u201cThe voice of the Lord with strength (<\/span>ba-koach<\/span><\/em>) (<\/span>29:4<\/span><\/a>) does not say specifically \u201cwith His (i.e with God\u2019s) strength\u201d. This implies that the voice of God is heard according to the strength of each and every individual, what each person can bear. The wording: \u201cThe voice of the Lord with strength\u201d (<\/span>29:4<\/span><\/a>) suggests that each person may hear the voice of God in his or her own
