Ascribe to the Lord, O divine beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name. Bow down to the Lord, majestic in holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters. The God of glory thunders, the Lord, over the mighty waters\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.1-3?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:1-3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This Psalm is recited frequently, in its entirety, in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.1-3?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish Liturgy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Chief Rabbi Joseph H. Hertz comments on the recitation of this Psalm in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kabbalat Shabbat <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">service (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Authorized Daily Prayer Book <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1948, pp. 354-355):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThunder-Storms of tropical intensity are frequent in Palestine in winter, and the Israelite saw in them special manifestations of Divine might and majesty. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bney \u2018Eylim <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cdivine beings\u201d (which he translates \u201cSons of Might\u201d) refer to the angels, standing in God\u2019s immediate presence and watching the storm, who are called upon by the poet to praise Him whose glory is seen in the storm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the final verse of our psalm: \u201cMay the Lord grant strength to His people. May the Lord bless His people with peace\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.11?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Rabbi Hertz adds that the God who rules and stills the storm, is the same Who blesses His people with moral strength and lasting peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Megillah.17b.9?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talmud Bavli Megillah 17b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (see also<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Rosh_Hashanah.32a.6?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosh HaShanah 32a<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) learns the order of the first three blessings of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amidah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the first verses of our Psalm. The first blessing, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cPatriarchs\u201d) is related to: \u201cAscribe to the Lord, O Sons of Might (i.e. \u201cThe Patriarchs\u201d) (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.29.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The second blessing of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Amidah, Gevurot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\u201cMighty Deeds\u201d) is related to: \u201cAscribe to the Lord glory and strength\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.1?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The third blessing of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Amidah, Qedushot<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(also called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kedushat ha-Shem<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 \u201cthe Sanctification of the Name&#8221;) is related to: \u201cBow down to the Lord, majestic in holiness\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.2?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Berakhot.28b.16-17?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berakhot 28b<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that the 18 Blessings of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Amidah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prayer correspond to the 18 mentions of God\u2019s Name (\u201cLord\u201d) in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It also notes that there are 18 mentions of God in the three paragraphs of the Shema.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Midrash_Tanchuma%2C_Shemot.25.5?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Tanhuma Shemot 25:5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that the verse: \u201cThe voice of the Lord with strength (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba-koach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.4?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) does not say specifically \u201cwith His (i.e with God\u2019s) strength\u201d. This implies that the voice of God is heard according to the strength of each and every individual, what each person can bear. The wording: \u201cThe voice of the Lord with strength\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Psalms.29.4?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29:4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) suggests that each person may hear the voice of God in his or her own
