The world’s scariest force is chaos – uncontrollable and unpredictable. Ancient denizens of the Mediterranean equated chaos with the sea, with mighty water: mayyim rabbim “great water” (v3) and mabul “the flood” (v10). It then moves to earth as God thunders his way down the Mediterranean coast and across the wilderness (vv. 3-9). It concludes by comforting the reader: the raucous of thunder is not scary. It is merely God establishing his mastery and control over an unpredictable world: “The Lord sat enthroned during the Flood,” he controls chaos; and thus “The Lord sits as king of the world, forever” (v10).
