Edward Elgar – \u201cGive unto the Lord\u201d op. 74 for choir and organ<\/span><\/p>\n

The English music of the 18th and 19th centuries suffered from the lack of a dominant figure who would make an important and original musical statement, to counter the rise and dominance of German music during those two hundred years. That is, until Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934), who, in his creations, brought together English culture and national spirit, together with the musical heritage of Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201chymn\u201d <\/span>Give Unto The Lord<\/span><\/em> is one of the most perfect syntheses of a psalm, sung in its entirety, together with a great symphonic musical form, painstakingly constructed, written for choir and organ (originally – orchestra).<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes all this possible is the repetitive structure of the psalm, and its content, which invites a monumental musical treatment, very \u201cpomp and circumstance,\u201d as in Elgar\u2019s famous march by that name. The work was written for a festive charity event for St. Pauls\u2019 Cathedral in London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the repetitions of \u201cAscribe to the Lord\u201d lay the ground for the powerful opening theme, expressing the praises of the masses, it is \u201cthe voice of God\u201d that becomes the central theme of the composition, with its many repetitions, and expressed in fear and trembling. Between these two, the composer does not avoid musically indicating the many images from nature that occur in the psalm: the \u201cmighty waters\u201d are evoked by a quick gliss along the keyboard of the organ; the breaking of the cedars, by the breaking of voices and a rapid fire display of echoing and back-and-forth of melodic fragments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This sublime psalmic symphony ends \u201cwith a still small voice\u201d on the sentence \u201cmay the LORD bestow on His people wellbeing,\u201d where only a thunderous final chord of the organ signifying the glorious end. Ironically, the pieces was written and first performed in 1914, two months before the eruption of the First World War.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
