Language is important. Words have meanings, they convey ideas to other people, so they can understand what you are thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

In psalm 28 verse 3, the psalmist prays \u201cDo not count me with the wicked and evildoers who profess goodwill toward their fellows while malice is in their heart.\u201d \u201cProfess goodwill\u201d is not the only possible translation. <\/span>Dovrei shalom<\/span><\/em> literally means \u201cspeakers of peace\u201d. Perhaps, \u201cthose who speak about peace with their friends, but intend malice in their hearts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A \u2018dichotomy of evil\u2019 is found in the disconnect between speech and intent, or redefining the meaning of the language you are using in order to discredit another.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few scenarios come to mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

In one, when you talk about equality and fairness, but only hire people who look like you. It\u2019s not that the person you ultimately hire is not capable, so you tell people that you were just hiring the \u201cbest\u201d, but you didn\u2019t truly consider the other candidates you quickly disregarded.<\/span><\/p>\n

How can someone be the best when there is no real competition?<\/span><\/p>\n

Another example is even more insidious. Communicating with the <\/span>doublespeak <\/span><\/i>made famous by George Orwell\u2019s <\/span>1984<\/span><\/i>; using words in ways that sound pleasant and logical to the listener, but are truly despicable. One that comes to mind is the \u201cLimpieza de Sangre\u201d, or the Purity of Blood acts in Spain and Portugal from the 15th century on. How could someone be against \u201climpieza\u201d (cleanliness)? Another is when the Nazis used the terms \u201crule of law\u201d and \u201corder\u201d, when what they really meant was anything but. Who could argue with having a lawful and orderly society?<\/span><\/p>\n

These seem like very different situations. But what happens when you tell the person you didn\u2019t hire that there are just \u201cbetter\u201d candidates? How is the word \u201cbetter\u201d not equally as charged, and as problematic, as \u201ccleanliness\u201d or \u201claw\u201d? It seems to make the situation logical and not emotional, not biased, as if there exists an \u201cobjective\u201d better or worse set in stone when it comes to candidates for a particular job.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are subjective rules that you created to ensure a better fit for some people and not other people. \u201cQualified\u201d itself is a meaningless term like that. No one wants to hire an \u201cunqualified\u201d person, but the qualification itself can become utterly subjective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps a contemporary reading of this psalm could be, \u201cdo not let me become one of those people who speak subjective concepts as objective truths.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
