While living there under his patronage, H\u00e4ndel wrote the 11 \u201canthems\u201d known today as the Chandos Anthems. These are eleven wide-ranging cantatas in English, of the sort that Henry Purcell had pioneered. The longest of these cantatas is number 10, known as \u201cThe Lord is my Light and my Salvation,\u201d and its first half is based on verses 1,3,4,6 of Ps. 27. The other parts of the compositions are based on verses from a hal-fdozen other psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From he verses he chose for his work, it is clear that H\u00e4ndel was not interested in the overall narrative of Ps 27 but rather, in expressing the general optimistic idea of praising God who could extricate the believer from all harm. Therefore, he edited out all the parts of the psalm that deal with present affiliations and troubles, and then added to what was left other verses from different psalms, that express this idea of praise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The composition opens with a \u201csymphony\u201d of the sort that H\u00e4ndel liked: a slow, even heavy introduction, followed by a short and energetic selection, with the voices chasing after one another. The four sections that are sung with the text of Ps 27 are performed alternately between a solo tenor and choir, such that verses 1 and 4 are given the voice of an individual, while verses 3 and 6 is the expression of a crowd.
