Our psalmist wrote: \u201cI wash my hands in innocence, and walk around Your altar, O LORD, raising my voice in thanksgiving, and telling all Your wonders\u201d (6-7). These verses have been used in rabbinic literature to depict levels of religious commitment ranging from the sublime to the quotidian.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Talmud cited it once in reference to personal hygiene:<\/span><\/p>\n

Hiyya b. Abba said in the name of R. Johanan: If one consults nature and washes his hands and puts on tefillin and recites the Shema\u2019 and says the <\/span>tefillah<\/em>, Scripture accounts it to him as if he had built an altar and offered a sacrifice upon it, as it is written, \u201cI will wash my hands in innocence and I will compass Thine altar, O Lord.\u201d (Berakhot 15a)<\/span><\/p>\n

In yet another citation, it is a pious hedge against tainting the performance of a mitzvah (the four species on Sukkot) through illegal possession of its appurtenances:<\/span><\/p>\n

Another interpretation of “And you shall take for yourselves on the first day [an <\/span>etrog<\/span>, a <\/span>lulav<\/span><\/em>, myrtle branches and willows]” (Leviticus 23:40) is [the understanding of] that which is written (Psalms 26:6), “I wash my hands in innocence”\u2013with a purchase and not with theft, as we have learned there (Sukkah 29b): A stolen or dry lulav<\/em> is disqualified, of a tree-god or a condemned city is disqualified. “And walk around Your altar, O Lord”\u2014like that which we learned there (Sukkah 45a): Each day they would circle the altar one time and say, “O Lord, please save us; O Lord, please save us” (Psalms 118:25). Rabbi Yehudah says, “<\/span>Ani vaho<\/span><\/em>, please save us.” And on [the seventh] day, they would circle the altar seven times. “Raising my voice in thanksgiving” – these are the sacrifices. “And telling all Your wonders” – Rabbi Avin said, that is Hallel\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, in the Midrash Tehillim (on these verses), the previous assignment to a stolen <\/span>lulav<\/span><\/em> is given a broader spiritual purview:<\/span><\/p>\n

If one took a stolen lulav<\/em>, it is as though the lulav<\/em> itself stood before God and cried out: \u201cI am stolen,\u201d \u201cI was robbed.\u201d And the ministering angels complain about him, saying: \u201cWoe to the man whose defense attorney has turned his prosecutor.\u201d Therefore, David said: \u201cI shall wash my hands in innocence;\u201d [a lulav<\/em>] must be purchased and not stolen.<\/span><\/p>\n
