Our psalm is a prayer for vindication, perhaps to be recited by one who is coming before God in the Temple: \u201cOf David. Vindicate me\u2026O Lord, I love Your temple abode, the dwelling-place of Your glory\u201d (<\/span>26:1-8<\/span><\/a>). This psalm, in its entirety, is recited in conjunction with the Torah readings for <\/span>Shabbat Acharey Mot<\/span> and <\/span>Shabbat Trumah<\/span><\/em>. \u201cO Lord, I love Your temple abode, the dwelling-place of Your glory\u201d (<\/span>verse 8<\/span><\/a>) is part of the<\/span> Preliminary Hymn<\/span><\/a> recited upon entering the Synagogue in the Morning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to<\/span> Talmud Bavli Megillah 29a<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0 Abaye said, \u201cInitially, I used to study Torah in my home and pray in the synagogue. Once I heard and understood that which King David says: \u201cO Lord, I love Your temple abode, the dwelling-place of Your glory,\u201d (<\/span>26:8<\/span><\/a>), I would always also study Torah in the synagogue (to express my love for the place in which the Divine Presence resides).<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tanhuma Pekudei 2-<\/span>3<\/span><\/a> preserves an extensive interpretation of \u201cthe dwelling-place of Your glory \u2013 <\/span>meqom mishqan kevodekhah<\/span><\/em>\u201d. This refers to the earthly Temple, which is directly opposite the place in Heaven where \u201cYour glory\u201d resides. Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai said: This verse indicates that the earthly Temple is directly opposite the heavenly Temple, since it also says: \u201cYour own mountain, the place You made to dwell in, O Lord, the sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands established\u201d (<\/span>Exodus 15:17<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ya\u2019aqov, the son of Issi, asked, Why does King David pray: \u201cO Lord, I love Your temple abode, the dwelling-place of Your glory\u201d (<\/span>26:8<\/span><\/a>)? The answer is that the Tabernacle is equal to the Creation of the world itself! For, concerning the first day of Creation, it is written of the Heavens: \u201c\u2026You spread out the Heavens like a tent-curtain\u201d (<\/span>Psalms 104:2<\/span><\/a>). Similarly, concerning the Tabernacle, it is written: \u201cYou shall then make curtains of goats\u2019 hair for a tent over the Tabernacle\u201d (<\/span>Exodus 26:7<\/span><\/a>)\u2026[Similar Midrashim on days two through six follow here]\u2026Concerning the seventh day of Creation it says: \u201cThe heaven and the earth were finished\u2026on the seventh day\u201d (<\/span>Genesis 2:1-2<\/span><\/a>). Similarly, concerning the Tabernacle, it is written: \u201cThus was completed all the work of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting\u201d (<\/span>Exodus 39:32<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concerning the conclusion of the Creation of the world, it is written: \u201cAnd God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it, God ceased from all the work of creation that He had done\u201d (<\/span>Genesis 2:3<\/span><\/a>).
