XXIII) that Haydn composed in 1794 during his second visit to London. He found the songs in a collection that was published that year by William Tattersall, by the name of \u201cImproved Psalms,\u201d as ironic as that may sound. The collection consisted of muscial settings by contemporary English composers to texts (that had rhyme and poetic meter) by an English scholar and poet named James Merrick, based on the chapters of Psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Merrick\u2019s paraphrases on Psalms had been known for several decades already, authoritative critics of the time found them \u201csloppy,\u201d because of their weak correspondence to the originals. However, a close examination of the text will reveal connections with\u00a0 Psalms in certain ideas, such as praising God\u2019s Temple, avoidance of the wicked, and general praise of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haydn structured the composition in an A-B-A form, where the lovely melody that opens and closes the pieces is dedicated to the praise of God, while the middle part, in a minor key, is somewhat more complicated, and expresses the poet\u2019s recoiling from sin and sinners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The piece is written for a choir in three voices.
