  1. All the bad things he didn\u2019t do<\/em>. The psalmist doesn\u2019t describe all the good things he did, but what he avoided doing. And in particular – the bad influences that he distanced himself from.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Dangerous company.<\/em> \u201cScoundrels…hypocrites;…evil men… wicked;… sinners\u2026 murderers.\u201d What are they up to? Verse 10: \u201cwho have schemes at their fingertips, and hands full of bribes.\u201d That also explains the temptation, and the enormity of the challenge for the psalmist to choose not to be part of their ilk<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cI wash my hands in innocence\u201d<\/em> That quote is from here (verse 6 – and also Ps. 73), but we have already met \u201cclean hands\u201d as a symbol for innocence – see, e.g., Genesis 20.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. What\u2019s the altar got to do with it<\/em>? In verse 6, \u201cI\u2026 walk around Your altar, O LORD, raising my voice in thanksgiving, and telling all Your wonders.\u201d Is the Temple the social alternative to the evil society outside? Is the psalmist saying that he not only is testifying to his innocence before God, but also comes to the Temple to become purified?
