The poem gives four different views of what makes Yahweh majestic, and each turns on the question of who, if anyone, can ascend the mountain. Uniquely, each new view entails reanalysis of something said in the previous one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the opening description of Yahweh\u2019s majesty (verses 1\u20133), Yahweh owns the world and everything in it because of the amazing way he created it: dry life-supporting land founded upon the world\u2019s waters. This is presented like a miracle of science. Yahweh is a master of knowledge. The description ends with a rhetorical question: \u201cWho could ascend Yahweh\u2019s mountain?\u201d To ascend is to claim to have equal knowledge of the world. The rhetorical question expresses how utterly singular Yahweh\u2019s knowledge is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What comes next (verses 4\u20135) treats the preceding question as if it were not rhetorical after all, but the simple one, \u201cWho <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ascend Yahweh\u2019s mountain?\u201d It answers, a person of integrity may, who when called upon to prove themselves can swear by Yahweh with a clear heart. Someone like this who ascends the mountain to be near Yahweh will return home blessed by him with health and sustenance. All will see their success and know they merited it through integrity. The majesty of Yahweh, in this view, comes from his commitment to integrity and paying close attention to individuals and their dealings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third view (verse 6) piggybacks on the second, but gives it a twist. It answers an unasked question, Who is that? Who has such integrity? It answers, an entire people does \u2014 not an individual after all \u2014 the people Jacob, who seek Yahweh out. In this view, anyone of Jacob (= Israel) may ascend Yahweh\u2019s mountain because <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a society<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they are committed to him. Yahweh\u2019s majesty is located in having a relationship with an entire people over time. The people has committed to Yahweh and he lives in their midst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final section (verses 7\u201310) entails a double reanalysis. It returns to the idea that no one at all could possibly ascend Yahweh\u2019s mountain, but not because of Yahweh\u2019s singular knowledge; because of his singular power. It dramatizes the scene of Yahweh\u2019s royal self ascending his mountain victoriously after a mighty battle. What battle? The only meaningful battle that expresses Yahweh\u2019s kingship and majesty is the battle against other cosmic forces, gods. Subduing those forces creates and sustains the world, and for any of those forces to attempt to ascend Yahweh\u2019s mountain would be to challenge him, which is unthinkable. In this view, Yahweh\u2019s majesty is a function of power, the power to create the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without the middle views, the poem features only divine power: the inhabitable land upon the waters is the result of divine battle, as in many myths across the region. The middle views may have been added (in stages) to redirect the poem, first to divine ethics, then to divine nationhood.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":61080,"id":61080,"title":"2sam22-divine
