Some psalms are meant to be read. Others are meant to be sung. I think psalm 24 is meant to be sung by two singers, each with a different outlook on life.Their “back and forth” choir shows the tension between their two outlooks of life, one focusing on God and the other focusing on man.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the verses of the psalm, together with the subtext of what each verse expresses:<\/span><\/p>\n

Singer #1: <\/span>God owns the earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants<\/strong><\/p>\n

God is all. The sole role of a person in life is to serve God. Other aspirations of<\/span> people are not important.<\/span><\/p>\n

Singer #2: <\/span>But He founded it upon the ocean, set it on the rivers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

God made the earth a place livable for humans.\u00a0 Therefore, people-and their<\/span> aspirations- count.\u00a0 In fact we are the purpose of creation!<\/span><\/p>\n

#1: <\/span>Who may ascend the mountain of God? Who may stand in His holy place?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What person in this world can claim to have achieved a Godly level of existence?<\/span><\/p>\n

#2: <\/span>He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not taken a false oath by My life or sworn deceitfully.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many people! God doesn’t demand superhuman achievements. Therefore, many<\/span> people are able to “ascend the mountain of God”.<\/span><\/p>\n

#1: (<\/strong><\/span>Who) shall carry away a blessing from God, a reward from God, his deliverer?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if we assume that many can “ascend the mountain of God”, but who is<\/span> worthy of <\/span>a blessing <\/span><\/i>from God?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

#2: <\/span>This is the generation <\/i>that seeks him: the ones who seek Your presence, (i.e.) Jacob!\u00a0 (Selah)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer: The people of Israel, the children of Jacob, all are worthy of God’s<\/span> blessing, since we seek out God’s presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

#1: <\/span>O gates, lift up your heads! Be uplifted, you everlasting doors, so the King of glory may come in!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

What worldly item is spiritual enough to enable God to enter the world?<\/span><\/p>\n

#2:\u00a0<\/span>Who is the King of glory? \u2014 God, mighty and valiant, God, valiant in battle.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

God comes to this world because of human physicality. When people cry out to him,<\/span> he comes to help them.<\/span><\/p>\n

#1: <\/span>O gates, lift up your heads! Lift them up, you everlasting doors, so the King of glory may come in!<\/strong><\/p>\n

But is there anything in this world intrinsically worthy to “lift up the gates” and bring<\/span> God into this world?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

#2: <\/span>Who is the King of glory? \u2014 God of hosts, He is the King of glory! (Selah)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The title “God of hosts” belongs to God since he is the king of the people of Israel<\/span> (see Jeremiah 7:21, 16:9, 32:14). Furthermore, God’s glory resigns within the People<\/span> of Israel (see Leviticus 9:23).<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n
