Georg Friedrich H\u00e4ndel, Lift up your\u00a0 Heads O ye Gates, from the Messiah<\/span><\/p>\n

From all the musical adaptations of this attractive psalm, it seems we have no choice but to return to H\u00e4ndel\u2019s classic rendition from the oratorio, Messiah (see also <\/span>the selection from the Messiah in the post on Ps 2<\/span><\/a>). In addition to the undeniable popularity of the choral sections of this work, it also has a special relationship to the Hebrew Psalter, not just as the source of the ancient text, but also as the inspiration of the dramatic, live rendition.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second half of Ps 24 is constructed as a dialogue between two choirs, in a way that was very popular among Baroque composers (a paraphrase of this appears in the opening section of Bach\u2019s St. Matthew\u2019s Passion). However, H\u00e4ndel had at his disposal only one choir. Therefore, he divided the parts between male and female voices. \u201cO gates, lift up your heads! Up high, you everlasting doors, so the King of glory may come in!\u201d sing the women. \u201cWho is the King of glory?\u201d respond the men, four times; \u201cthe LORD, mighty and valiant, the LORD, valiant in battle\u201d answer the women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the parts are exchanged: the men\u2019s choir declares the arrival of the king of glory, and the women ask the rhetorical question. This repetition is not H\u00e4ndel\u2019s invention – it\u2019s there in the text itself!<\/span><\/p>\n

Then finally the different voices unite for the concluding answer: \u201cThe LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory! Selah.\u201d H\u00e4ndel piles up on this one verse grand musical structures: echoing between the voices, polyphonal complexities, virtuosic embellishments, and then resplitting into \u201casking\u201d and \u201canswering\u201d voices, that chase each other gaily.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of these inventions are built on one phrase: the second half of the chapter\u2019s concluding verse. There\u2019s no chance here of monotony or boredom. On the contrary, while listening, the feeling – and the desire –\u00a0 grows that this music should go on forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
